Child Find is a program mandated by the Commonwealth of Virginia which serves children from birth to age 21, inclusive. School districts are directed to screen, identify and evaluate those students who might need special education services to support their learning.
A developmental screening can be provided if parents have concerns about a child’s development in speech and language, fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, social-emotional or self-help skills.
Those children identified as eligible may receive special education services through New Kent County Public Schools. Child Find is an opportunity for children with special needs to receive early intervention services. The screening is used to determine if further intervention or assessment for special education may be appropriate. If the results of a screening suggest that services are needed, a referral to special education and a request for parental permission for evaluation is made.
