One of the goals in New Kent County Public School's six year plan is to provide a 21st Century education that fosters critical thinking, problem solving, communication, information fluency and creativity. To move toward achieving this goal and increasing engagement, we are providing our teachers and students with a greater access to technology during the 2015-2016 school year.
We are referring to this process as our digital conversion
. As a part of the process, we have installed wireless networks in all four of our school buildings. We will be providing a Dell New Chromebook 11
to all middle school and high school students and teachers. The Chromebooks will be distributed to students shortly after the start of the school year. The students will keep them throughout the school year for use at school and at home.
In addition to providing the necessary hardware for this transition, the district will also be providing extensive professional development for the teachers and expanding our available digital content and resources.
We understand that the life of a Chromebook in a backpack can be rough from time to time. To ensure that our students have regular access to their devices and do not have wait times associated with repairs, we have entered into a service contract with Dell. This will cover all repairs and allow for daily pick-up/drop-off of devices that are in need of repair. To offset the cost of this service, students in grades 6-12 will have a $40 Chromebook fee this coming year. It is our hope that as we move further into this transition students will not need to purchase as many school supplies as they have in the past.
