Please see the following for the frequently asked questions and answers:

Q:  When will the new 10 point grading scale be in effect?

A:  The new grading scale will be in effect beginning 2014-2015 school year for all students in grades 2-12.  Grades earned prior to 2014-2015 will remain on the former 7-point scale and will not be recalculated.

Q:  Why did NKCPS adopt the new 10-point grading scale?

A:  More than half of the school divisions in Virginia have adopted or are planning to adopt a version of the 10-point grading scale, including most divisions in the Richmond and Williamsburg/Peninsula regions.  College admissions offices note the benefit of consistency in grade scales across the school divisions and report that the 10-point scale is now the most prevalent grading practice used by high schools.

Q:  How will high school credit Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment courses be weighted?

A:  High school credit honors-level courses, as identified in the New Kent High School Program of Studies, will receive a 0.5 weight.  Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment (academic, transferrable courses only) will receive a 1.0 weight.  These weights are effective beginning in the 2014-2015 school year and will not be retroactively applied.

Example 1: A student earns a final grade of 86 B in World History II Honors.  With the 0.5 weight, this grade will be calculated in the student’s GPA as a 3.5.

Example 2:  A student earns a final grade of 91 A- in Advanced Placement Biology.  With the 1.0 weight, this grade will be calculated in the student’s GPA as a 4.7.

Q:  How will colleges and universities find out about this change in grade scale?

A:  The grade scale is included on the NKHS profile sheet attached to each issued transcript.  For students in the graduating classes of 2015-2018, both the current and new grade scales will be included on the profile sheet.

Q:  Will class rank and valedictorian/salutatorian calculations change?

A:  There will be no changes in these ranking calculations, the only changes will be in the Grade Point values of students’ final grades, based upon the new grade scales and course weights.

Q:  Will criteria for honor roll recognitions change?

A:  Honor roll recognition criteria will not change.

Q:  How can I get more information about the grading scale?

A:  Your child’s school counselor will be able to provide information for you.  You may also contact Byron Bishop at [email protected]
