Superintendent Brian Nichols

Mr. Brian Nichols was appointed as the next superintendent of New Kent County Public Schools at today’s school board meeting. His new position will be effective July 1, 2019 Nichols has more than 22 years’ experience in public education in Newport News Public Schools. Nichols has worked as a teacher, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, executive director of elementary school leadership, and acting superintendent in Newport News. Since 2013, he has served as the division’s chief academic officer.

“I am extremely honored to be selected as the next superintendent of New Kent County Public Schools,” said Nichols, “I am looking forward to working with the New Kent team. Together, we will prepare our students for successful futures.”

Sarah Grier Barber, chair of the New Kent County School Board, believes Nichols will be a great fit for the division. She stated, “We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Nichols to New Kent County Public Schools. His experience in public education and enthusiasm for learning and teaching will be a great asset to the division and community.”

Under his leadership as chief academic officer in Newport News Public Schools, student academic performance increased; Career and Technical Education opportunities expanded with the addition of courses in cybersecurity, aerospace engineering, computer modeling and simulation, and health sciences; and more high school students earned industry and career certifications. In addition, Nichols led the launch of SPARK, the Summer Program for Arts, Recreation and Knowledge, the region’s first public, day-long summer program which serves over 6,000 students. SPARK earned an award of excellence for innovative learning from the National School Boards Association.

To expose more students to STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education opportunities, Nichols created a STEM culture in Newport News Public Schools with an integrated curriculum and quarterly engineering design challenges. He has expanded access to college and career opportunities, increased extended learning programs, and launched more family engagement initiatives. Nichols will bring a wealth of experience to New Kent County Public Schools.

Nichols has earned a Master of Education in educational leadership from the College of William and Mary, and a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Christopher Newport University and is currently working on his doctorate in curriculum and educational technology from the College of William and Mary.

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the school board with the superintendent search process.
